He tried and tried, but with no success. Pyotr Petrovich slowly took out a cambric handkerchief reeking of perfume and blew his nose with the air of a virtuous man who has suffered a wound to his pride and who, moreover, is determined to receive an explanation.
Is there any reason you put on your mod voice for this response? Perhaps the last of his moral actions is to commit suicide. Russia, they insisted, had a firm basis for its civilization: the collective values of Orthodox Christianity and of the village. (IV.2, 277, Ready) As a reader, I can feel sorry for him, I can feel glad about his good actions, but I cannot have fellow-feeling for such a self-annihilating person. Even one of the most horrible moments in the whole novel, Raskolnikov’s dream of the horse being beaten to death, has its grim humor – the drunken peasant Mikolka makes himself thoroughly ridiculous when he desperately flogs and beats his little horse, harder and harder, in frustrated fury that he can’t get the poor beast to die. The father’s pained and abashed dismissal, “Just drunken idiots fooling around,” which he delivers in choked-off fragments in Russian (“пьяные, шалят, дураки”), sounds far fresher and produces a far more poignant effect than previous efforts: “They are drunken and foolish, they are in fun” (Constance Garnett, 1914); “They’re drunk, playing mischief, the fools” (David McDuff, 1991); “They’re drunk, they’re playing pranks, the fools” (Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, 1992).
It is just an update, the language of my time instead of that of a hundred years ago, and as a result I find, however accustomed I am to reading English from that time, that the book is lighter on its feet.
Raskolnikov commits a murder to see if he is a Nietszchean Superduperman. As a translator I noticed the multiple repetitions in the text and had to decide whether they were semantically loaded and needed to be preserved in my translation, or whether they were dispensable and could be replaced by a synonym or a pronoun. Michael Katz’s translation came out with Liveright, a branch of W. W. Norton (link), with an introduction by Katz.

NPS: I have already alluded to the good actions he performs, and while we may suspect his motives when he tries to make a gift of money to Dunia, and certainly when he makes a much more lavish gift to his (no longer) intended child bride, his farewell gifts to Sonia and her little brother and sister are untainted by sinister motives, and the reader is bound to approve of him at those moments. He is alleged to be responsible for the deaths of three other characters (his wife, his servant, and a young girl). What problem was the translator trying to solve here?
Outstanding! I also find “virtuous” funnier than “benevolent,” but I will bet just because it is closer to my natural English.
I had never given any thought to the effect a translation has on the enjoyment of a book in a foreign language, but I was so irritated with Crime and Punishment that I eventually solved the mystery.
It felt different.

The differences between Ready and Garnett are numerous but, choice by choice, small. Or there is the macabre but absurd scene near the end of the book where the demented Katerina Ivanovna drags her little children out into the street in ragged fancy dress to dance and sing for pennies.
I think he's going to irritate me. You'll then be redirected back to LARB.

About Crime and Punishment “A truly great translation .
Consider this passage, in which Raskolnikov inches closer to his crime: He hadn’t far to go; he even knew how many steps it was from the gates of his building: seven hundred and thirty.
What a nose-blowing. But I also want to work my way back through Dostoyevsky in the next few years; at sixty I now think I'm truly old enough to understand him. 4, A Chat with Greta Matzner-Gore about Dostoevsky and the Ethics of Narrative Form. What are the best translations into English of Dostoevsky's: 1. Today, when global youth is at least as thoroughly alienated as it was in Dostoyevsky’s time, when “half-baked” ideas circulate instantaneously, and when President Putin’s televised puppetry is simply the crudest and most transparently cynical example of the genre on the airwaves, the “curious sense of weightlessness” is spreading. ... Do not leave me, suffering, stay!
Work while it is called To-day, for the Night cometh wherein no man can work. In his introduction, Ready quotes Virginia Woolf’s reaction to Dostoyevsky’s novels in “The Russian Point of View” (1925): “Against our wills we are drawn in, whirled round, blinded, suffocated, and at the same time filled with a giddy rapture.” Ready has delivered Dostoyevsky’s “whirlpools, gyrating sandstorms, waterspouts” to the modern reader without losing a grain or a drop. For instance, to send someone to the wood demon is to send them to hell. I simply did it; I did the murder for myself, for myself alone, and whether I became a benefactor to others, or spent my life like a spider catching men in my web and sucking the life out of men, I couldn’t have cared at that moment…” (Garnett). ), and 4. He stared at them and at last with his free right hand began trying to catch one. Both are similar, as is typical with translations of novels.
BK: It’s interesting that you both chose the same character! Garnett is the more faithful translation. Yes, in Russian, in order, with Frank's biography on that side. I’ll flog ‘er dead!”.
BK: The act of translation puts you in intensely close contact with the text. Young. A little more of the spider, from Svidrigailov’s great chapter: Waking up, flies attached themselves to the untouched portion of veal on the table next to him. “Flog ‘er till she drops!” shouts Mikolka.
We accept only ready-made ideas, and so those indelible traces that are left in the intellect by the progressive development of thought, that build mental power, never furrow our minds. The translation is old but …
Some flies woke up and settled on the untouched veal, which was still on the table.
Fear of aesthetics is the first sign of weakness! “Interesting pursuit” sounds like a sarcastic comment from the narrator. Garnett: On an exceptionally hot evening early in July a young man came out of the garret in which he lodged in S.Place and walked slowly as though in hesitation towards K. Bridge. This past November two new translations of Crime and Punishment were published.
Let’s take a look. But his sleep had not refreshed him: he woke up bilious, irritable, ill-tempered and looked with hatred at his room. Is Garnett being a literalist here, reproducing a hiccup in the original?
