Why Does Jeff Kent Get Overlooked in the Hall of Fame Debate? I never try to extrapolate excellence that didn’t actually occur. I don’t need to spend a lot of time on this. There are two players who were uniquely responsible for the Los Angeles Dodgers World Series title in 1988, Orel Hershiser and Kirk Gibson. I am a Mets fan. It was Game 5 at Shea Stadium, with the Mets facing elimination, starter Masato Yoshii was struggling. Two years ago, Hershiser was on the same ballot. Makes sense that a N.L.

Hershiser pitched 7 scoreless frames, giving up just 4 hits and a walk while fanning 7. That was certainly the opinion of the BBWAA, who considered his case for two years, earning 11.2 percent of the vote in 2006 and then dropping off the ballot completely after getting just 4.4 percent in 2007. In Game 2, Hershiser went the distance in an easy 8-2 win. After Los Angeles re-took the lead, the Dodgers reliever, of course, famously gave up a 3-run blast to Jack Clark in the top of the 9th to send St. Louis to the Fall Classic. There are so many players in the Hall because they lasted long enough to reach milestones, even though they weren’t remotely close to Hall of Fame quality players for the last several years of their careers. So, does he deserve a spot among the greats in the Hall of Fame? His ERA was 4.17, his ERA+ 100 (precisely league average). However, the 12 mediocre seasons that followed this spell of brilliance leave Hershiser looking from the outside in. In May and June 1968, 20 years earlier, Drysdale tossed 58 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. Orel Leonard Hershiser IV (born September 16, 1958) is an American former baseball pitcher who played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1983 to 2000.

Cy Young Award. Orel settled in as the 2nd best starter on the ’95 Indians, behind 41-year-old Dennis Martinez. On the other side, Eckersley, on that one swing of the bat, had a negative WPA of -0.87. (Given Hershiser’s Post-1990 ERA of 4.17), I always felt that Morris was one of those players. Having gotten that out of the way, I’ll admit that Hershiser is the definition of a borderline candidate but, because of his uniquely historic ’88 campaign, he’s just above my line. There are a few Hall of Famers down near his level, but most are marginal at best.

Hershiser is one of the 10 candidates on the Hall of Fame “Today’s Game” ballot. But Gibson is not borderline. Orel played baseball at Cherry Hill East High School in New Jersey. He had dome very good years but his overall statistics don’t seem to be overwhelmingly HOF worthy. Orel Hershiser’s sophomore campaign was nothing short of magnificent.

New York lost Game 6 in Atlanta and the Braves advanced to the World Series. Unlike WAR, it’s really easy to understand how this is calculated.
