While I usually find Asimov's writing to be both quixotic and enjoyable, these three novels felt stilted and unnatural. Isaac Asimov, one of the great science fiction writers, has a great book that is beautifully written as a science fiction mystery. In trying to fill in the few remaining tidbits from my high school feast upon Asimov's science fiction, I re-read these three dectective-of-the-future novels.
One of the detectives was a robot. It is essentially a detective story, and illustrates an idea Asimov advocated, that science fiction can be applied to any literary genre, rather than just a limited genre. The first one I read (out of order) was The Robots of Dawn, and I loved it. Asimov was, and remains, one of my favorite authors. That’s the twist. Daneel identifies him as being present at two incidents. Everyone lives under domes in mega-cities. Anyway, nobody did it better than Asimov and this trilogy is well written (if a bit of a light summer read) and worthwhile.

Meanwhile, Earth is overpopulated (with a total population of eight billion, three times that of Asimov's 1950s) and strict rules against robots have been passed. The early robot stories are behind us and we’re now looking at a far different different Earth where everyone lives cheek to jowl in cities built beneath the surface of the Earth. This trilogy is an incredibly well thought out series concerning robots and the future of earth. This was such a chore to read.

Vince Barrett, a young man whose job was taken over by R. Sammy. There are legendary problems with accelerationism, and I think it’s probably Asimov’s biggest misstep. I ordered this trilogy and only received one of the books instead. There's a Commodore 64 text adventure of the third book too.
