Cougar Mountain was home to the Nike S-20 Launch Battery Site. I also know there is a certain parking lot in that direction as well- not sure which one. I went today to Red Town, pretty much straight down, offering a nice incline on the way back. Will need a little clean up. Not sure about the id on this one. The trail was even and easy to walk on- i can see why it's perfect for trail running! All the waterfalls were dried up. We live closely, so have hiked these trails many times.

This black substance was leaking from a Conifer at a curve in the trail. It's right off highway 900 between Renton and Issaquah.
We later found out from a trail runner familiar with the trails told us it was in the OPPOSITE direction from that sign. There is one spot where a large tree split and you have to climb through a lot of branches. Also, be sure to park along the shoulder of 169th Ave. Today, I took a short journey to Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park, specifically the Wilderness Creek Trail. This fungus was discovered under a fallen conifer log. So many downed trees from yesterday’s winds. There were small (2-3 cm) fronds at the end of each grass. This snail was located on the top of a small log next to the trail. Nice views. There are maps, typically, at the front entrance. Continue about 0.5 mile before turning right (south) onto 166th Way. Wilderness Creek, Anti-Aircraft and Red Town trailheads provide maps and there are directional signs at each trail intersection. I assume it's a salmon/thimbleberry. Due to hazards from historical mining activities in this park you must stay on the trails identi˜ed on this map.

Overall, a good day to find some native Puget Sound species! There was only one view that was ok but it was very narrow and obstructed. The leaves were very hard to see since they only sprouted at the top of the tree. About 5 or 6 spots where trees have recently fallen. Beautiful, quiet and a perfect quick workout. Beautiful dense and tall trees, a waterfall, the deserted coal mines, a lot of elevation gain. No bikes are allowed anywhere in the park. 11,142 photos. Due to the amount of wildflowers along the trail, i'm guessing this and the other yellow petalled flower thrive in disturbed soil.

Talus is a development of 630-acres on the east-facing slope of Cougar Mountain, adjacent to the eastern border of Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park, a 3,000-acre protected area featuring forests, 200 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, wildlife and scenic vistas. This plant looked exactly like a raspberry. On busy days it would be good if, you coudl spend days exploring the different areas, it is unbeleivable that king county saved this huge area from developement. I know it's not a moss because of the fronds projecting from the main area, but I'm having trouble coming up with an id of it.

There are tons of trails to hike and bike as well as million dollar views in many areas. There's a sign towards the end or the trail that says Longview Peak 0.4 mi --> with an arrow pointing in one direction. There is a big paved parking lot for cars and horse trailers. Drive about 0.75 mile to a gate and park, being sure not to block the gate. At the top, there was strange orange coloration on the bark.

We hiked the shy bear which was 6 miles and took 2 hours. The flowers has rounded petals and also small round spiked orbs-i'm guessing this will turn into a flower. The day is rainy, overcast, and mid-50's temperature. Transmitting facilities. One Cedar I found had a shiny black substance coming out of a hollow part of the tree. The Far Country Trail keeps on going past the bench.
Unfortunately it was the only one in the area. Shangri La, Protector, Clay Pit Mine Road, Mine Shaft Trail, East Fork Trail, Primary Paved Roads, Maintained Gravel or Dirt Roads. Respectable amount of up and downhill, really wonderful fall colors. This lichen i believe is nicknamed 'old man's beard'. Overall a nice walk/hike. Plenty of parking, and not that many people at 2pm. No bikes are allowed anywhere in the park. We didn't head in that direction because we were losing daylight, but hopefully this tip is helpful for some! Pretty long took about 4 hours. It has a VERY large trunk, about 4 feet across.
