As there is little cover to protect them from predators, desert animals also use speed as a defense mechanism. A xerocole (from the Greek x> Ros , which means 'dry', and Latin col (ere) , meaning 'to inhabit'), commonly referred to as desert animals, are animals adapted to live in the desert. As ectotherms are usually small and unable to store their own body heat, they quickly take on the external temperature of the environment, which necessitates controlled microenvironments.

Reptile diggers have nostrils that face upwards instead of forwards for the same reason. Many feed on moisture-filled plants: the aardvark obtains water from the wild cucumber and the camel eats succulents and bushes in the winter, getting enough water to go two months without drinking. They are nocturnal and spend most of their day burrowed under sand to avoid the heat.

Meaning of Xerocole. The sandgrouse from North Africa and Asia are able to carry small quantities of water in the feathers on their belly to bring it back to the nest for their family. The climate and body size may be affected the basal metabolic rate of the animals. Additionally, their nature is to burrow in the sand, in captivity or as pets they died from stress if no sand is available. A matter of perspective.Once upon a time, there was a Viking warlord called Bjorn Ironside.

During autumn, jerboas are at their heaviest in preparation for hibernation. Janati, A., and R. Talbi. Most desert lizards also have a black peritoneal lining in their abdominal cavity to absorb UV radiation and prevent it from damaging internal organs. [7] Specific species of jerboas plug burrow entrances with soil to retain moisture and keep hot air from entering burrows.

To conserve water, they both avoid evaporation and concentrate excretions (i.e. Hearst, Michael, and Jelmer Noordeman. Jerboas are adapted to live in deserts therefore are called xerocole animals. In captivity, their life span is significantly reduced.

Some animals pour bodily fluids on themselves to take advantage of evaporative cooling. The IUCN considers many species as endangered, including the Egyptian tortoise, gazelles, antelopes, Saharan cheetah, fennec foxes, caracals, and pronghorns. They become darker when burrowing and lighter when basking - both the desert iguana and the zebra-tailed lizard become so pale that they appear to shine due to the amount of light they reflect.

Most small xerocoles live in burrows to avoid the desert heat. [13], The jerboa reproductive activity depends on the seasons. "Distribution and Seasonal Variation in Hypothalamic RF-amide Peptides in a Semi-Desert Rodent, the Jerboa. Some xerocoles are able to obtain water from halophytic (saltwater) plants, as they can metabolize high amounts of oxalic acid and produce very concentrated urine. Birds adjust their feathers to create or dissipate an insulating layer, as typified by the ostrich.

Xerocole is a term used to call the animals which can adapt with the harsh environment of the desert. Similar to other hibernating animals, the mating season for jerboas is spring to summer.[14]. The following animals are known xerocoles: src: mylandrestorationproject.files.wordpress.com. Xerocoles get a substantial amount of hygroscopic water from their food. The Australian water-holding frog conserves water by retaining urine in the bladder, swelling up like a balloon; it then uses its bladder as a water reserve during the dry season. Xerocoles are usually light and sandy in color as a means to reflect solar radiation and reduce heat absorption.
