Feinsand notes that Bruce is an inexpensive option with Seattle still paying a majority of his three-year contract from the Mets, which ends after this season. Phillies: Is a Kris Bryant trade still possible, and at what cost? It hovered in the low twenties since 2015, but now it is up to about 29 percent. Bruce could help fill the void left by Odubel Herrera after the Phillies placed him on leave this week.

It would also mean that the team is comfortable with their other options in the outfield, which would be Adam Haseley, Roman Quinn, and whichever outfielders stick on the 60-man roster. The solo blast was Bruce’s 14th of the year. Jake Scheiner had a great year in A-ball Lakewood last year, hitting .296/.372/.470, but he is hitting just .256/.324/.356 in High A Clearwater as a 23-year-old. Phillies: Can anything be salvaged from Nick Williams? Does trading Bruce make sense if the Philadelphia is in a playoff hunt come August 31, or should they go with the high octane offense offsetting questionable pitching?

Phillies acquire Jay Bruce from the Mariners.

The Phillies have only a one-game lead on the Braves in the standings at the time of this writing, and FanGraphs still has the Braves as being the favorites to win the division.

Phillies: Exhibition lineup provides hints for Opening Day, Phillies rumor: GM Matt Klentak ‘expected’ to be let go. To complete the trade, the Phillies are sending High-A prospect Jake Scheiner to Seattle along with $18.25 million to cover the $21 million left on Bruce’s contract. It probably means that Rhys Hoskins, Bryce Harper, J.T. Jerry Dipoto has struck again! The Phillies have acquired Jay Bruce from the Mariners and the outfielder will join the team on Monday in San Deigo, according to MLB.com's Greg Johns. Feinsand notes that Bruce … Bruce should be a useful player for the Phillies, though the Mariners might have gotten a better player had they decided to eat more money. Phillies eye date for J.T. Nick Williams was supposed to be that guy, but he has been terrible this season, hitting a paltry .159/.205/.232 albeit in only 73 PA.

It also means something went wrong with the starting rotation or bullpen and the team is desperate for some help. Jerry Dipoto has struck again!

Removing Bruce from the roster also means that top prospect Alec Bohm has come up and earned an everyday role, whether it’s at third, first, or DH.

The Phillies lineup in 2020 projects to be one of the best in baseball, especially with the implementation of the designated hitter.

One has to wonder if the Mariners would have gotten a better return had they decided to eat all or most of the remaining money on Bruce’s contract. Bruce’s strengths and weaknesses are clear this long into his career. He has a solid 8.7 BB%, though that is down compared to how much he was walking over the past two years. The Negro Leagues are celebrating their centennial and it is has become more clearer than ever that future generations depend on MLB players using their voices to make sure the Negro Leagues are never forgotten. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal was the first to report the structure of the deal. PHILADELPHIA, PA - JUNE 26: Jay Bruce #23 of the Philadelphia Phillies reacts after hitting the game winning double in the 10th inning to beat the New York Mets 5-4 during a baseball game at Citizens Bank Park on June 26, 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If there’s a team that needs a DH or a left-handed bat that can move an arm the Phillies might have a deal to be made. So if the Phillies are going to trade Bruce, it means that a lot of things are clicking and that he’s expendable.

The Mariners and Phillies agreed on a trade that sent Jay Bruce to Philladelphia. The Mariners will receive minor league infielder Jake Scheiner and cash considerations in return. What Herrera allegedly did is far, far more serious than baseball will ever be. Bruce could help fill the void left by Odubel Herrera after the Phillies placed him on leave this week. Whether that’s a pitcher going down, opting out, or failing to perform, trading away one of your biggest bats for an arm might become more of a necessity than a luxury. Unsurprisingly, his strikeout rate has really taken a hit. Bruce finished Friday’s 4–3 win with a .212/.283/.533 batting line, 25 extra bases, 28 RBI and an .816 OPS through 184 plate appearances. His addition in Philadelphia would help fill the void left by Odubel Herrera after he was placed on leave earlier in the week. Bruce is having a strange year after having a bad one in 2018. This trade still does not solve the Phillies center field problem, however, unless Scott Kingery continues to mash, which I am not betting on. The Negro Leagues need help from MLB players. Bruce, 32, became the eighth player to hit at least 300 career home runs and 300 doubles when he crushed a 416-foot home run in the bottom of the seventh inning off the Angels’ Tyler Skaggs on Friday. The Tampa Bay Rays are a great team, but is the way they play baseball and the way their front office constructs a roster the bets for baseball? Bruce has always been a low-OBP, high-SLG guy, but he is taking it to new extremes, and now he is going to a ballpark that is far more hitter friendly than T-Mobile Park (I’m still getting used to that name change). Luis Torres is a Featured Writer at Beyond the Box Score. The Mets thought they were done with Jay Bruce after sending him to Seattle during the offseason, but one trade later, he's on the Phillies and tearing it up.

Mark Feinsand wrote a piece on MLB.com examining one trade candidate for all 30 teams and named Jay Bruce the likeliest trade chip for the Phillies. To top off all of Bruce’s strange offensive numbers, he has just a .210 BABIP. One is that the team has stayed healthy through the COVID-19 pandemic and that none of their big bats have gone silent with little time to ramp up for the season. Odúbel Herrera is on administrative leave for at least another two weeks due to an arrest for an alleged domestic violence incident. Mark Feinsand wrote a piece on MLB.com examining one trade candidate for all 30 teams and named Jay Bruce the likeliest trade chip for the Phillies. The Phillies are expected to take on most of Bruce's contract, which owes him $14 million in 2020. Part of that is because the number of home runs he has hit is a big chunk of his hit total, which does not count towards BABIP because they are not “in play.”. Jay Bruce Confirms Trade to Phillies, Expected to Join Team on Monday . I would certainly prefer him in the outfield over Rhys Hoskins, who is having a great year offensively. The Mariners will get something from a player they do not need anymore in what is now a lost season, despite its promising start. Build your custom FanSided Daily email newsletter with news and analysis on Philadelphia Phillies and all your favorite sports teams, TV shows, and more. That being said, the Phillies have to prepare for the possibility that he could be suspended long term. However, the all encompassing stats mask what is a strange batting line. That led to the Mets unloaded him during the offseason in exchange for Robinson Canó and Edwin Díaz. The Phillies can sit him against tough righties in favor of Bruce, and they can do the same with Andrew McCutchen. Rays’ outfield Randy Arozarena is destroying baseballs this October, Morning Mound Visit: Clayton Kershaw once again left in too long, Morning Mound Visit: Braves have another disastrous first inning. He has not been hitting at all, anyway, with a measly line of .222/.288/.341. The Mariners and Phillies agreed on a trade that sent Jay Bruce to Philladelphia. Realmuto, and Andrew McCutchen are all clicking offensively. Bruce would fit better on an AL team because he is more of a 1B/DH type nowadays, but he is not a disaster in the outfield. (Photo by Rich Schultz/Getty Images). He is hitting .212/.283/.533, and he is doing an impression of Joey Gallo by having more home runs (14) than singles (10). He signed a three-year, $39 million deal with the Mets, but hit only .223/.310/.370 over 94 games. Adding the DH solved a lot of issues for the Phillies, including adding a spot for Bohm. Furthermore, Bruce is not much of an outfielder anymore, so he was worth -0.5 WAR. The Phillies get a useful role player for a few million dollars and a prospect that they will likely not miss. It also gives Bohm live at-bats during a year with no minor league season. The Phillies acquired slugger Jay Bruce for next to nothing nearly one year ago; the trade looks even better now, assuming MLB institutes a universal DH.
