The 4K remastered disc includes a fascinating audio commentary by film scholar Adrian Martin who provides an in-depth analysis of the film by drawing parallels to Greene’s book. Despite Raven’s earlier behaviour I quickly found myself rooting for him against this duplicitous git. This Gun for Hire is out now on Blu-ray from Eureka Entertainment. How does he feel when he does the things he does, when asked by peppermint-popping Willard Gates (Laird Cregar)? But it’s a fascinating conversation that This Gun for Hire has with its audiences when it’s fighting hard to heroically humanise  Raven, and comparatively suggest ‘he can’t be that bad’. Parts of this were slow, but I did really like the characters. |, March 13, 2003 Fantastic book - everything worked for me perfectly. This Gun for Hire hits nearly every button in its film noir repertoire; an evolving mystery, the femme fatale beauty, atmospheric mood lighting, plenty of moral ambiguity and acts of betrayal. Raven's moral problems and need for others are complications unsuited to action fantasies that just want to create light entertainment out of killing and destruction. Gun For Hire Shooting Range; Search. Of course, a key reason Raven is such a compelling screen presence is very much down to Alan Ladd’s deliciously hard-boiled performance. In what is becoming something of a regular special feature on Eureka discs of films from the 40s and 50s, this audio-only extra (the screen features occasionally changing posters to avoid screen burn-in) features the Lux Theatre radio adaptation of the film from January 1943 and stars Alan Ladd and Laird Cregar from the original cast, with Veronica Lake’s role played here by Joan Blondell. An in-depth review of the film This Gun for Hire (1942) directed by Frank Tuttle, featuring Veronica Lake, Robert Preston, Laird Cregar T he film which catapulted Alan Ladd to stardom at the age of 28 was this respectable adaptation of the popular Graham Greene novel A Gun for Sale.. Sorry, your blog cannot share posts by email. It’s a film that is very much of its time in terms of societal and gender attitudes, yet also a conversation about male masculinity and Raven’s emotionally repressed, asexual remit where ‘appearing soft’ is a weakness (and he actively goes out to prove how ‘manly’ he is).

He notes the film’s influence on Le Samouraï (it would be hard to miss), talks about Greene’s work as a film critic and how his books could have a cinematic structure, and also provides details of how the nefarious work of the House of Un-American Activities Committee negatively impacted on some of those involved in the production.

Complex enough? Veronica Lake delivers a couple of patriotic lines about nasty turncoats selling deadly Gas formulas to the enemy. This Gun For Hire was the first of four films they made together, and perhaps their best. On top of that, Calico was one of the most fabulously competent heroines I've come across in historical romance. The final ten minutes is handed over to a comical performer of the time whose name I didn’t catch ands whose antics I didn’t laugh at, as well as a salute to Alan Ladd, who the very next day was off to serve in World War II. Moral objectivity (or lack of it) aside, it doesn’t take away from how captivating Ladd’s performance is. It's a major effort for Raven to trust anyone, and the slick action ending (during an air-raid gas drill in downtown L.A.) wouldn't work if there wasn't that tension between Raven and his "only girl," Ellen. I loved the hero and heroine, whose romance was filled with witty banter and a reserved but sizzling undertone chemistry that carries throughout the book. For good reason it made Alan Ladd a star. Today you can guarantee this would all be CGI, but I have to presume that Lake trained for some time to pull them all off for real with such casual aplomb (I only spotted a single quick optical dissolve). They could do a lot worse than bringing it out in its original brilliance. I really liked this book. The first scene in this book is an instant attraction done right. Review: This Gun For Hire by Jo Goodman I am still having the lingering after-effects of a book hangover with this book.
The more of film noir that I see, the more I love it as a genre. The whirlwind script, from an era more closely associated with Preston Sturges and Hope and Crosby comedies, mixes hardboiled Grahame Greene spy moves with some slick Paramount packaging. He is the new star here, around which this smartly structured, consistently gripping and splendidly cast and acted crime drama revolves, with all the elements coalescing over the course of 81 waste-free minutes into a memorable and immensely satisfying whole. There are some unsurprisingly lovely portraits of Veronica Lake, but my favourite has to be a behind-the-scenes still of her lying on a bed, smilingly conversing with a man that I presume is director Tuttle while serious-faced props men are tying her up with rope for an upcoming scene. On his way out of the apartment block, a small handicapped child he passed on the way in is still sitting on the stairs and asks him to pass her dropped ball to her. The fact that this type of archetypal character was imagined by the same writer who gave us the classic Brighton Rock shows his apt willingness to capture the ugliness of the world and the unscrupulous characters that inhabit it which Tuttle brings to life. And I don't mean this in a bad way, I just didn't think she had it in her. One of the most most seductive aspects of this busy scene-setting is how smoothly and efficiently the threads that connect the principal characters are drawn, like strands of a web that has Gates at its centre. The deliberate, off-kilter experience forces its audience to question the shifting moral spectrum of its characters, backed by two outstanding performances in Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd. The plot was suspenseful but a bit too involved for me, and it wasn't that hard to work out who the baddie was fairly early on.
