Over the course I’ve collected grades from Baseball America, FanGraphs, and MLB Pipeline. In 2019, the slugging first baseman hit .351/.446/.707 with 17 doubles and 23 homers.

This is a good fit in the sense that Whitley and Hancock are well rounded, but here is hoping for a smoother path to the majors for Emerson. I’ve even gone back through some top 100 lists and grabbed grades for players dating back to 2013 (though I could go back further but just haven’t yet - it’s a very manual process). At 6’1 220 lbs, he is a force to be reckoned with at the plate. Required fields are marked *. Torkelson is one of the most MLB-ready players in this draft. There are a lot of guys with amazing stuff here but it’s a good warning that command matters a lot. His ability to work counts and control at-bats leads to him being able to drive his pitch.

There’s something about Torkelson’s plate approach that screams “elite plate presence”. Jim Turnbull went to Dick’s Sporting Goods, bought catcher’s gear and squatted behind the plate for his son.

“I was trying to get a loan,” Gardenhire deadpanned, “see what he had.”

Oh man, that title isn’t exactly sexy but I’m not trying to hide the idea of this article for the sake of vanity. As a right-right first baseman, the easy MLB comparison for Torkelson is Paul Goldschmidt. Like Torkelson, Mauer was a highly touted player regarded as a potentially generational hitter. “And in talking with Tork, it seems like he’s already been through a little bit of the gamut. “I like him. “Those guys are really important,” Gardenhire said. (please forgive the visual format, it’s a bit crude.

While some Major League pitchers were struggling to find catchers for their throwing sessions while training camps were suspended, Spencer Turnbull just had to go home to Mississippi. After seeing what Torkelson can do at the plate, he is one of the “MVP caliber” players in this MLB Draft. Just take it easy, relax and enjoy the game of baseball like you have.”. He'll wear one in the shins if you ask him to.”. Learn how your comment data is processed.

Pretty good list of college guys with great secondary pitches (Rodon, Puk, JBB, Manoah, Beck) but also I think all of them other than Manoah have had significant injuries (which can be said of most pitchers to be fair). I just wanted to reassure him. I’ve always liked him since I saw him the first day, because he’s a real athletic kid, he’s game-on, and he works his tail off.

He scored a 50 on the MLB scale which is right around “Average”, and his elite bat certainly does make up for it.

Torkelson really impressed scouts after his freshman year performance, where he hit .320/.440/.743 with 25 homers. Their player-manager relationship continued for a decade. • No.

Of course, the grade cement on teenagers isn’t quite as dry and that’s even more so for prep amateurs, but the grades given to Veen show the exact type of prospect he could be. — Spencer Torkelson (@spennyt) July 4, 2020. Herrmann played the corner-outfield spots, first base and catcher with the Twins. There are some good names on this list: Corey Seager, Franklin Barreto, Keston Hiura, Juan Soto but three of them were younger than Martin, so maybe Hiura is the closer comp, even if the concern for Hiura’s defense isn’t really one for Martin. His powerful approach coupled with his ability to get on base would remind you of Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds. Just go out and have fun and play.

I think it’s always helpful to 1) work with any data you have or can find and 2) think of different ways to look at that data in a contemporary way. Finding the next MLB star using current MLB stars.

Hey dad, wanna have a catch?

And no, the hard-throwing Turnbull doesn’t let up on his mid-90s fastball. The only glaring difference is that Joey Votto was originally drafted as a catcher, not a first baseman.

The rookie made it to the big leagues before more-heralded prospects from the same class.

We’re happy to have him, excited to have him. However, Martin hit in the SEC while Gonzales hit in the WAC, so the stats are more solid with Martin. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. The Alex Bregman stands out, as he’s one of the few players on any of these comp tables that is a true star, but he gained stardom after a bit of a swing change that took his power grade up a few spots. Torkelson has a pretty great outcome for his closest comp: Yordan Alvarez, the AL Rookie of the Year. So if we want Joe Smith’s comparables, we use Joe Smith’s hit tool as the “average” instead of the average of all the hit tools in the database.

Unfortunately for him, he’s no Rickey Henderson on the basepaths. Most first baseman aren’t usually known for their glovework, but more for their bat.

“Anytime I go home in the offseason, I'll throw to him. Really weird list. Furthermore, he walks at a very solid rate as well, meaning he gets on baseball regardless of whether he hits a homer or not. Brett Baty went 12th overall to the Mets last year where he was an older prep prospect with big power and a possibility to play 3B, Eloy Jimenez is one of the more hyped prospects in the past few years (I think - and it’s not a bad thing) as he dominated every level of the minors.

Royals Rumblings - News for October 16, 2020. Gonzales’ comps match Martin’s perfectly for the first three then diverge. “Polly can play just about anywhere, and he made good progress in Spring Training, put some really good at-bats out there, and we moved him around a little bit. OK, that wasn’t really what Gardenhire told him.

Then you repeat this for each tool, then sum up the values of all the z-scores, and the lowest total is the closest player to the average (which is again the player we are trying to find a comparison for).

The Astros are gonna to do this aren’t they. Salvador Perez a finalist for Players Choice Comeback Player of the Year, Questions for the Royals going into this off-season.

Gardenhire compared him to Chris Herrmann, whom he managed in Minnesota.

When Mauer retired after the 2018 season, Gardenhire made the trip to Minneapolis to attend his announcement.

Alvarez was loved by the scouting community as a freak of nature who possessed amazing raw stuff with still good projection on it with command. One of these tools is power and a lot of it. The math isn’t really important here, you just need to know we are trying to find players whose tools are the closest overall to the player we are trying to find a comparison for.

Often the grades were the same but every so often there was a slight difference).

He handled himself pretty well.

Spencer Torkelson will fit right in because of those two things.

Main Image As usual, the injury bug bit him like many pitchers before and he’s been just completely MIA over the years.
