Also in camp as non-roster invitees are Corban Joseph, Carlos Asuaje and Hernán Pérez. With righty Charlie Morton toeing the slab for the Rays for Saturday's decisive Game 7, Reddick will return to the starting lineup. The Cubs have settled upon their roster to open the 2020 campaign. Biddle was outrighted off the Reds' 40-man roster on Wednesday but apparently chose to become a free agent rather than accept the team's assignment to a minor league affiliate. What a lifesaver it would be to have a guy who can spell Baez every now and again instead of letting Javy play every single game and burn himself out near the end of the season. Descalso, of course, spent the early portion of his career with the bitter-rival Cardinals. Kiermaier (hand) back in Rays' lineup for Game 7, MLB Not that positional stability is a guarantor of success, but the Cubs had no real consistency at second base last year, and in the early days of spring training 2020, that hasn’t changed. He earned his playing time as a gritty, pesky, versatile player who did enough in the field and on the bases to overlook his generally subpar bat. It’s likely that these and other clubs will mostly value him for his ability to field any position on the dirt, but it surely doesn’t hurt that he’s now familiar with left field.

Catcher Josh Phegley and reliever Rex Brothers both made the cut, so they’ll be added to the 40-man roster. It seems that the timing of the decision was driven by the potential unavailability of Ben Zobrist and Daniel Descalso. The Cubs owe Descalso about $500,000 for the rest of this year, $2.5 million for 2020 (with plate-appearance bonuses that he won’t make) and a $1 million buyout for 2021. Short is in a similar situation as Higgins that he may have to wait until there is an open spot or an injury because the infield is full currently with Baez, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Bote, Jason Kipnis, and Hoerner already ahead of him on the depth chart, but Short is still a better option than Descalso.

Descalso fouled a ball off his leg on Wednesday, but it didn't appear to be a serious thing. One area that could use improvement for Short is the hit tool, with a career minor batting average of just .241, but with potential 20 home run power and a potential .400 OBP that may not make much of a difference. Barnes is hitless in four at-bats this series but hit lefties at a .316/.409/.316 clip during the regular season, so Dodgers manager Dave Roberts found a spot for him against Baves southpaw Max Fried. There is substantial risk in the waiver process, of course, because it allows another club to snatch that player away. Completed Trades.

Acuna has just three hits -- and just one extra-base hit, a double -- through the series' first five games, hitting .176/.333/.235 against the Dodgers to this point. The Cubs initially optioned Russell to Triple-A, though his stay proved short. by Handedness, 2007 June Amateur Draft - Round: 3, Pick: 18, Overall: 112, Team: St. Louis Cardinals. Several factors will be considered as the Cardinals go about filling those holes, though one oftentimes influential one will be excluded from this year's mix. Presumably, Ben Zobrist and Ian Happ will spend the majority of their time in the outfield, though both have ample experience on the dirt as well. It’s a low-cost deal, but the length says that the Cubs see Bote as a valuable piece of their long-term future. That’s the group, and unless Zobrist comes out of his unofficial retirement, the two most likely players to win the job are Bote and Kipnis. The Cardinals made a monumental move this week when they acquired superstar first baseman Paul Goldschmidt from the Diamondbacks, but the Redbirds certainly aren’t done yet. 2:02pm: The signing has now been announced.
