It sounds like the onboard audio chip turns off the speaker output when the headphones are connected, and I'm betting this is a hardware limitation.

I've been using it for about a month now so I got the basics down, but not the fine details. To get sound to come out of the external speakers connected directly to the computers audio out jack, you must then disconnect the headphones from the monitor audio out jack, for the original output must be disconnected for a new one to be used.
