Spanning the years 1964 to 1973, On Ideology contains the seminal text, “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatus” (1970), which revolutionized the concept of subject formation. State apparatuses merely describe the institutions that hold and exercise State power. Like Freud’s notion of the unconscious, Althusser argues, ideology is eternal in the sense that it exists as “omnipresent, trans-historical and therefore immutable in form throughout the extent of history” (161). Ideology distorts the relationship between the worker and his or her conditions. Das Handeln und die dahinterstehende Ideologie seien von den ISA determiniert; jeder einzelne ISA gebe ganz bestimmte Handlungsmuster für die Individuen vor. They are inserted into practices governed by the rituals of the ISAs.

Althusser uses the term "interpellation" to describe the process by which ideology constitutes individual persons as subjects.
Ausgewählte Schriften 4, Hamburg 2004, S. 14. Ideology is thus thought as an imaginary construction whose status is exactly like the theoretical status of the dream among writers before Freud. I hardly need add that this familial ideological configuration is, in its uniqueness, highly structured, and that it is in this implacable and more or less ‘pathological’ (presupposing that any meaning can be assigned to that term) structure that the former subject to-be will have to ‘find’ ‘its’ place, i.e. The existence of ideology and the hailing or interpellation of individuals as subjects are one and the same thing. All these interpretations thus take literally the thesis which they presuppose, and on which they depend, i.e. The first concerns the object which is ‘represented’ in the imaginary form of ideology, the second concerns the materiality of ideology. 0000010100 00000 n Dies sei allerdings kein Prozess der von heute auf morgen, sondern eher auf lange Zeit ausgelegt sei. Freud shows that individuals are always ‘abstract’ with respect to the subjects they always-already are, simply by noting the ideological ritual that surrounds the expectation of a ‘birth’, that ‘happy event’. This emphasis on objective factors was an attempt to rescue Marxism from existential notions of Jean-Paul Sartre and Maurice Marleau-Ponty. 0000199158 00000 n
