The Caulfield Cup is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held under handicap conditions, although the Melbourne Racing Club is in the process of turning the race into weight for age (WFA) conditions.

Taufan's Melody is one of only five eight-year-olds to win, and the only one since Amounis in 1930, while Dunaden, Admire Rakti and Ming Dynasty are the only seven-year-olds to score since 1950. Mirage Dancer prepared for the race with a strong win in the G1 Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick on 3 October. The race is held annually in October on the third day and final day of the Melbourne Racing Club Spring Carnival. The Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup are both handicap races, but they boast a completely different weight profile for winners. Caulfield Cup Past Results The Caulfield Cup is the second most popular racing event in Australia, behind only the Melbourne Cup. It makes Godolphin's decision to line-up with Hartnell, who is this year's topweight with 58kg, not as daunting as it might have seemed before the turn of the millennium. Unlike the Melbourne Cup, the spring's other big Group 1 staying handicap - the $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) - has proven a winnable option for horses with big weights.
